What is the Image Cropper?

The Image Cropper lets you select exactly the part of a photo you want to keep by dragging a resizable crop box directly over the image, then downloads just that selected area as a new image. It's built for cutting out an unwanted background, focusing in on a subject, or trimming a photo down to a specific shape.

Everything happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to a server, so it's fast and private.

How to use it

1. Drop your image onto the upload area, or click it to browse your device.
2. A crop box appears over the image. Drag inside the box to move it, or drag any corner handle to resize it.
3. Optionally choose an aspect ratio preset (Square, 4:3, 16:9, 3:2) to lock the crop box to a fixed shape, or leave it on "Free" to crop to any shape you like.
4. Watch the live crop size update as you adjust the box.
5. Click Crop image and download your result.

Choosing an aspect ratio

• Free - crop to any shape or size, with no fixed ratio between width and height
• 1:1 Square - equal width and height, ideal for profile pictures and social media posts
• 4:3 - a classic photo ratio, common for standard prints and older displays
• 16:9 - widescreen ratio, ideal for video thumbnails, banners, and modern displays
• 3:2 - a common camera sensor ratio, close to a standard printed photo

Locking an aspect ratio keeps the crop box's proportions fixed as you resize it, so you don't need to manually calculate the right width-to-height balance.

Moving and resizing the crop box

Click and drag anywhere inside the crop box to move its position without changing its size. Drag any of the four corner handles to resize the box, either freely or locked to your chosen aspect ratio. The area outside the box is dimmed so you can clearly see what will be kept and what will be cropped away.

How it works technically

As you position the crop box on screen, the tool tracks its position relative to the image's actual pixel dimensions, not just its displayed size, so the crop stays accurate even if the image is shown smaller than its original resolution. When you click crop, it draws only the selected region from the original full-resolution image onto a new canvas, then exports that as your cropped image, preserving full image quality within the cropped area.

Will cropping reduce my image's quality?

No, the cropped area keeps its full original resolution and quality, since it's copied directly from the source image rather than being re-rendered at a lower detail level.

Can I crop a very small or very large selection?

Yes, the crop box can be resized to any area within the image's bounds, from a small detail to nearly the entire photo.

What happens to the part of the image outside the crop box?

It's simply left out of your downloaded result. Your original file on your device is never modified, so the full original image is still there if you need it.

Can I change the aspect ratio after I've already resized the crop box?

Yes, switching to a different aspect ratio preset will adjust the current crop box to match the new ratio, keeping it centered on roughly the same area.
