What is the Flip / Rotate Image tool?

This tool mirrors an image horizontally or vertically, rotates it in 90 degree steps, or fine-tunes it to any exact angle with a slider, all with a live preview so you see the result before downloading. It's built for fixing a sideways photo, mirroring an image, or straightening a slightly tilted scan.

Everything happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to a server.

How to use it

1. Drop your image onto the upload area, or click it to browse your device.
2. Click Flip horizontal or Flip vertical to mirror the image along that axis.
3. Click Rotate left 90° or Rotate right 90° to turn the image a quarter turn at a time.
4. Use the fine rotation slider for any angle in between, useful for straightening a slightly crooked photo.
5. All of these can be combined and stack together. Use Reset to original at any point to start over.
6. Click Download image to save your result.

Flip vs. rotate, what's the difference?

Flipping mirrors the image, like looking at it in a mirror, reversing left and right (horizontal flip) or top and bottom (vertical flip), without changing which way is "up." Rotating turns the entire image around its center point, changing which direction is up. A photo taken sideways typically needs a 90 degree rotation to fix, not a flip, while a mirrored or backwards image (like text that reads backwards) typically needs a flip.

90 degree rotation vs. fine rotation

The Rotate left/right 90° buttons are the fastest way to fix a photo that's clearly sideways or upside down, since most photos need a rotation in exact quarter-turns. The fine rotation slider is for small corrections, like straightening a photo that's slightly tilted because the camera wasn't perfectly level when it was taken.

How it works technically

The tool applies your chosen flip and rotation transformations directly on an in-browser canvas, redrawing the image at the new orientation and angle. For fine rotation at odd angles, the canvas is sized to fit the rotated image without cropping any corners, so nothing gets cut off.

Frequently asked questions

Will flipping or rotating reduce my image's quality?

90 degree rotations and flips are lossless, no quality is lost. Fine rotation at an odd angle involves a small amount of resampling at the edges, but the difference is generally not noticeable.

Can I combine flip and rotate together?

Yes, you can flip and rotate the same image as many times as you like before downloading, and each action applies on top of the last.

What happens to the corners when I rotate at an angle like 15 degrees?

The canvas automatically expands to fit the newly rotated image, so no part of the original photo is cropped off, though this does mean the downloaded image will be slightly larger with some added blank space in the corners.

Can I undo a flip or rotation?

Yes, use "Reset to original" to clear all changes and start over from the uploaded image.
