How to simplify a ratio

  1. Switch to the "Simplify a ratio" tab.
  2. Enter the two numbers of your ratio into fields A and B.
  3. Click Simplify.
  4. The calculator reduces the ratio to its lowest whole-number terms and also shows the equivalent decimal value (A ÷ B).

For example, a ratio of 12:18 simplifies to 2:3, because both numbers share a greatest common factor of 6.

How to solve a proportion

  1. Switch to the "Solve a proportion" tab.
  2. Enter your known values for A, B, and C in the equation A : B = C : X.
  3. Click Solve for X.
  4. The calculator finds the missing value X using cross-multiplication.

For example, if A = 4, B = 8, and C = 10, then X = (B × C) ÷ A = (8 × 10) ÷ 4 = 20.

How ratio simplification works

To simplify a ratio, the calculator finds the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the two numbers and divides both sides by it. The GCD is the largest number that divides evenly into both A and B. Dividing both numbers by their GCD guarantees the smallest possible whole-number ratio that's still mathematically equivalent to the original.

For instance, with a ratio of 45:60, the GCD of 45 and 60 is 15. Dividing both sides by 15 gives 3:4 — the simplest form of that ratio.

How proportion solving works

A proportion states that two ratios are equal: A : B = C : D. Cross-multiplication says that A × D = B × C. Rearranging that equation to solve for the unknown value lets you find any missing term as long as you know the other three. This calculator always solves for the fourth term (X) in A : B = C : X, which covers the vast majority of real-world proportion problems.

Ratio vs. proportion — what's the difference?

A ratio compares two quantities, like 3:4. A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal to each other, like 3:4 = 6:8. In other words, a proportion is really just two equivalent ratios placed side by side — which is exactly why solving one lets you find a missing value in the other.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use decimal numbers?

Yes, both the simplify and solve tools accept decimal input, and the solver will return a decimal answer where appropriate.

What if my ratio can't be simplified further?

If the greatest common divisor of A and B is 1, the ratio is already in its simplest form, and the calculator will show it unchanged.

Does the order of A and B matter?

Yes — a ratio of 2:3 is different from 3:2, so make sure you enter your numbers in the order that matches what you're comparing.

Can I solve for a different position, like A instead of X?
