What is the PDF Watermark Generator?

This tool stamps a custom text watermark — like "CONFIDENTIAL," "DRAFT," or your company name — across every page of a PDF. You control the text, position, rotation angle, size, color, and transparency, and every page updates live in the preview as you adjust each setting, so you always see exactly what the final file will look like.

Everything runs locally in your browser — your file is never uploaded to a server, so it's fast and private even for sensitive documents.

How to use it

  1. Drop your PDF onto the upload area, or click it to browse your device.
  2. Type your watermark text — anything from a single word to a short phrase.
  3. Choose a layout: a single placement in one spot, or a tiled pattern repeated across the whole page.
  4. For a single placement, pick a position from the 3×3 grid.
  5. Adjust rotation (a diagonal 45° angle is the classic watermark look), opacity (how see-through it is), font size, and color.
  6. Watch every page thumbnail update live as you change settings.
  7. Click Add watermark and download your file.

Single vs. tiled layout

Single places one instance of your watermark text at a chosen position — a clean, minimal look that works well for a subtle "DRAFT" label in a corner, or a bold diagonal stamp across the center. Tiled repeats the watermark text in a grid pattern across the entire page, which makes it much harder to crop or edit out — a common choice for documents where you want to strongly discourage unauthorized copying or redistribution.

Choosing opacity and rotation

Lower opacity makes the watermark subtle enough that it doesn't interfere with reading the underlying content, which is typical for "DRAFT" or branding watermarks. Higher opacity makes it more prominent and attention-grabbing, often used for stronger warnings like "CONFIDENTIAL" or "DO NOT DISTRIBUTE." A 45° diagonal rotation is the traditional watermark angle because it's visible at a glance without following the natural horizontal reading direction of the text underneath — but a 0° horizontal watermark can look more like a formal stamp or label.

How it works technically

The tool renders your watermark text directly into the PDF's page content as real vector text, using the settings you've chosen for opacity, rotation, size, and color — it's not a flattened image, so the underlying document text remains fully selectable and searchable beneath the watermark, and the watermark itself stays crisp at any zoom level.

Common uses

  • Marking draft documents clearly as "DRAFT" before a final version is ready
  • Adding "CONFIDENTIAL" to sensitive reports, contracts, or internal documents
  • Branding shared PDFs with a company name or website
  • Discouraging unauthorized redistribution of paid or proprietary content with a tiled watermark
  • Marking sample or preview documents as "SAMPLE — NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION"

File size and privacy

Because watermarking happens entirely on your device, there's no upload wait and no privacy risk. Very large files or a very high page count may take a little longer to render thumbnails for, depending on your device's available memory, since everything runs locally rather than on a remote server.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a watermark after adding it?

This tool adds the watermark as part of the page content, so removing it afterward would require editing the PDF directly. Keep your original, unwatermarked file as a backup before downloading the watermarked version.

Will the watermark cover up my document's content?

You control the opacity, so you can keep it subtle enough to stay readable underneath, or make it bold and prominent — the live preview across every page lets you check the balance before downloading.

Can I watermark a password-protected PDF?

Password-protected files need to be unlocked first. Use the Unlock PDF tool to remove the password, then upload the unlocked file here.

Does a tiled watermark repeat the same way on every page?

Yes — the same tiled pattern, text, rotation, and opacity settings are applied consistently across every page of the document.
